Institutions, Economy and the Order of Knowledge
A wage is needed to sustain life; but if life is perpetually postponed in order to earn a wage, the equation does not close. Meaning is not waking each morning with enthusiasm; it is knowing where the time we give is going.
Data is not power in itself; it becomes political when the institution that turns it into a decision and the force that imposes the outcome come together. Beside “is our data safe?” we should place a harder question: whose future is being built with our data?
What is sold is not only our personal information; it is our attention, our hesitations and the probabilities of our future behaviour. Some part of our life should be able to remain in a darkness that is not measured, not predicted and not sold.
While labour builds the world, the worker grows powerless before the world they have built. Alienation is lived as an emptiness inside the individual, yet its source is usually in our shared order.
Some work steps onto the stage with its results; other work is noticed only when it is not done. Visibility is not a neutral light falling after labour; it is a resource distributed by the power inside an institution.
Digital platforms usually did not remove the middleman; they rebuilt intermediation. The middleman did not shrink — it became invisible enough to fit in our pocket.
Price shows not what is socially important but which wish is backed by money. When production is collective and ownership individual, creating value and appropriating it come apart.
The servers may be scattered across many places; the decisions may still be taken by a small team. Before announcing that we have abolished the centre, looking at where it has moved is the simplest but most necessary thing we can do in the name of freedom.
The “yes” of someone bargaining while hungry and of someone waiting for an opportunity with capital may be legally identical, yet they do not arise from the same freedom. Justice is not a stamp of approval at the end of a transaction but a continuing relation in which conditions can be changed.
The power that slipped from the state's hands did not evaporate; it settled into servers, payment networks and app stores. Perhaps the basic political question of our age is not who governs us but whether we notice that we are being governed.
Where the state withdrew, authority did not vanish; it was reshaped in the hands of a network administrator, a company, or a small group writing the code. Being technically distributed does not mean power is distributed equally.
Are the market and capitalism the same thing? Mutualism does not abolish exchange; it looks for an economy in which nobody, merely through a privilege over land, capital or credit, can draw a continuous income from another's labour.
