Examines the forms of authority that govern our lives, from the state to the workplace, from the family to digital platforms. It asks how power endures not only through repression but through obedience, habit, dependence and consent.
Perhaps the best way to understand authority is to ask, before “is this person strong?”, the question “what happens if I do not listen to them?” Freedom is not escaping every shared rule; it is not accepting a command merely because it declares itself natural.
The ballot box gives power a task; it does not grant ownership over the whole of society. The legitimacy of an elected power is understood as much in the authority it does not use as in the votes it received.
There is no document we signed; yet the order we were born into is described as a club we joined voluntarily. For someone with nowhere to go, staying is not a free choice.
There is an order, there is an act, there is a victim; responsibility evaporates between the steps. It is lost not in one link of the chain but in an order where nobody is obliged to see the whole.
Power does not radiate from a single centre; it is produced inside everyday relations at school, in hospital, at work. If it is everywhere, we need not look for a single centre of resistance either.
Who can be interrupted, who reaches information first, whose mistake is written into the file — these too are power. A workplace's democracy is understood not from the values statement on the wall but from what its least powerful worker can say in the face of injustice.
The tower sees every cell; the person in the cell cannot see inside the tower. The possibility of being watched does more than a constant supervisor would: a person becomes the guard of their own behaviour.
In services that look free, payment is made in attention and data rather than money. The problem is not only that somebody watches us; it is that the gaze makes itself invisible while it arranges our lives.
If a power first magnifies a danger and then asks for payment to protect us from it, what is the difference between a protector and a racketeer? What separates tax from tribute is not the law itself but accountability.
What distinguishes the state is not its aims but its instrument: being able to enforce its rule, if necessary, by touching the body. However customary this power looks, one question stays open — who protects us against the protector?
The impersonality of rules is a real achievement against arbitrariness. But the sentence “that's how the system works” can also be the most advanced form of authority — the one that makes injustice belong to nobody.
Trusting knowledge is a necessity of shared life; obeying the one who knows is not. The real problem is not that experts are wrong but that they are placed in the office of infallibility.
