Before asking “what is freedom?” there are other questions to ask: freedom from what, for what, with whom, and under which conditions? That a door is unlocked matters; but if we cannot reach it, its being open changes very little in our lives.
When the state withdraws, the space it leaves is often occupied by powers that are less visible and less accountable. For freedom it is not enough to ask “are you allowed to?”; we must also ask “and what happens to you when you do?”
A right written in law and a right usable in daily life are not the same thing. But being your own master is not raising a small supervisor inside yourself either; autonomy means being able to ask where a goal came from, not only to set one.
One says loudly, “I am setting you free”; the other says, “nobody is forcing you,” and makes necessity look like personal preference. The most dangerous power is the one that need not explain its decision — whichever language of freedom it speaks.
We did not choose our past, yet we are not obliged to do everything our past tells us. Free will may not be a magic button we are born with, but a capacity that grows and weakens according to circumstances.
When we take off the mould, no flawless and finished self emerges underneath. Perhaps the “real self” is not a hidden object waiting to be found but an open-ended story formed inside the relations we build and the roles we refuse.
A person more often bows not before a ruler but before an idea they have sanctified in their own mind. Yet if we turn that suspicion into a refusal of every common bond, the unique individual is left alone before powerful institutions.
The problem is not that we have needs; it is that our need grants someone else the authority to govern us. Giving yourself the law is not needing no one, but holding an equal say in the rules we live by together.
Freedom does not abolish the possibility of regret; on the contrary, it makes regret possible. The burden of choice can turn into the creative side of freedom only when the price of error stops being fatal and risks are shared fairly.
However crowded the menu placed before us, how free are we if we can have no say in the kitchen or in the rules of the table? Purchasing power is not decision-making power.
