Authority

On the Nature of Authority

Every order first turns its own necessity into a story. Obedience is born less of fear than of an inability to imagine another world.

Every order first turns its own necessity into a story. No one tells us “there is no other way”; we come to say it ourselves. The firmest ground of authority is not force but consent — or rather, the habit that looks like consent.

The invisible forms of obedience

A command is not always given out loud. More often it arrives as:

  • a calendar,
  • a form,
  • a sentence like “this is just how things are.”

What is invisible becomes unquestionable.

Obedience is born less of fear than of an inability to imagine another world.

The real question is this: who established the legitimacy of what we obey, when, and with which story? To ask this is not to topple authority; it is only to make it visible again.
